Another part 3 of a hugely successful franchise comes our way, this time in the form of the irascible green ogre Shrek (Myers), who with "pals" Donkey (Murphy) and Puss in Boots (Banderas) must find teenaged Artie (Timberlake) to take over the kingdom of Far Far Away after the current ruler (Cleese) croaks for the last time. Meanwhile, Shrek contemplates parenthood with his wife Fiona (Diaz), and Prince Charming (Everett) plots to take the throne himself. On-target jabs at fairytale princesses and the high school social scene fail to mask a weak plot and a lack of inspiration for many of the jokes. What happened to the razor-mouth antics of Donkey from the first movie, or something as clever as the Cops parody in Shrek 2? It's almost as if the writers purposefully tried to shy away from as many parodies and references as possible, but in doing so makes this a plodding copy of the many mediocre computer animated cartoons in the last few years. For Shrek 4, which is already in the works, let's hope some of the ingenuity returns.
